Speech-Language Pathology Evaluation at IUVO
The initial consultation is the first contact between the speech-language pathologist and the client.
It enables the speech-language pathologist to carry out an anamnesis interview (questions about the medical and developmental history) and to clearly identify the client's needs, so as to propose a plan adapted to his or her particular circumstances.
This is essential to understanding the origin of the difficulties reported, and is a fundamental step in the assessment process.
Initial Consultation
Evaluation
The speech-language pathologist will advise you on the best option for your situation during the initial consultation.
Detailed Evaluation: The detailed evaluation provides a comprehensive analysis of all aspects of the person's difficulties. It enables more specific recommendations and a comprehensive intervention plan to be drawn up. The detailed evaluation is necessary to establish a diagnosis or a speech-language pathology conclusion.
Summary Evaluation: The summary evaluation assesses only certain specific aspects in a non-exhaustive way, in order to rapidly put in place an intervention plan. It is indicated only when a diagnosis is not required, or when a person has recently been evaluated by a speech-language pathologist. A summary evaluation can be used to update a diagnosis or speech-language pathology conclusion that has already been made.
Multidisciplinary Evaluation: At IUVO, we are privileged to offer a multidisciplinary evaluation in speech-language pathology and neuropsychology, providing a complete picture of the person's cognitive development and a better understanding of the individual's potential.
Presentation of Results and Recommendations
During this meeting, the speech-language pathologist will take the time to explain the results obtained during the evaluation and the diagnosis or speech-language pathology conclusion, if applicable. Personalized recommendations and means of intervention will also be presented.
Therapy
Classic Therapy: Individual meetings between the speech-language pathologist and the person being treated, where targeted exercises are used to progressively address difficulties. The parent or caregiver is usually present for all or part of the meeting, so that they understand the work being done and can repeat certain exercises at home.
Parent Coaching: The speech-language pathologist analyzes the parent's behaviors and strategies, and offers advice on how to intervene more effectively with their child. Parent coaching is suitable for all paediatric clients and for parents committed to their child's success.
Lidcombe Therapy: a behavioral approach for young children (aged 3 to 6) who stutter, in which parents play an active role by providing positive, structured feedback to encourage fluent speech in an everyday context. Several of our speech-language pathologist are trained to implement this specialized therapy.
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy: A rehabilitative approach that aims to correct the muscular functions of the mouth and face, such as breathing, swallowing, chewing and speaking, in order to improve muscular balance and orofacial posture. Orofacial myofunctional therapy can also be used to work on lisps.
